Lord John Clayton and his pregnant wife Alice are spared during a mutiny aboard the Fuwalda and left on a wild stretch of African coast with their belongings. No rescue is coming. Something in the jungle is already watching.

The Claytons build a cabin and survive for months, but an ape attack shatters Alice’s mind. She gives birth to a boy, drifts through a year in a fog, and dies. Clayton’s last journal entry is a question with no answer. That night, the apes come inside.

A female ape named Kala, grieving her own dead infant, follows the sound of a crying baby to the cabin. She takes the child as her own and faces down her mate Tublat to keep him. She names the boy Tarzan — White Skin.

At ten, Tarzan is faster and cleverer than the other apes but painfully aware he looks nothing like them. He discovers his parents’ cabin and a shelf of books with pictures of creatures that look like him. Kala watches from the clearing, knowing she’s losing him.

Now a young man, Tarzan finds his father’s hunting knife and teaches himself rope work and combat through months of trial and failure. He kills the lioness Sabor and lets out a cry the jungle has never heard before.

Colonial hunters push inland, shooting anything worth a bullet. Kala is hit. Tarzan reaches her in time to hold her as she dies. He reads his father’s journal entry about the crying baby and reckons with losing both parents to the same jungle.

Tarzan hunts down Kala’s killer and drives the remaining hunters from the jungle. He challenges Kerchak for leadership of the tribe and wins. But kingship isn’t enough — he retreats to the cabin, alone with his father’s books, waiting for something he can’t name.

A second ship arrives carrying an expedition that includes Jane Porter and William Cecil Clayton. Tarzan watches from the canopy. He begins leaving flowers, fruit, and eventually a handwritten note at the edge of camp: I AM TARZAN. DO NOT BE AFRAID.

The rogue ape Terkoz grabs Jane and drags her into the jungle. Tarzan drops from the canopy, kills Terkoz, and carries Jane back through the trees. He speaks his own name aloud for the first time. Clayton arrives too late — and knows it.

Tarzan takes Jane above the canopy to see the jungle from his world. He shows her the cabin and his father’s books. They share a connection that needs no words. Clayton watches them return from the treeline together, and something shifts behind his eyes.
