deadlyvalidghoul

A supernatural police procedural set in Derbyshire, "the ghost capital of England." A philandering investment broker is killed in a locked hotel room while in bed with his mistress — an iron spike driven through a straw doll and into his chest, the door bolted from inside, the window three floors up — and the only witness swears the killer was the ghost of his wife, who is alive and abroad. The case falls to gruff old-school skeptic Detective Sergeant Edwin "Big Ed" Cooper and his sharp new partner Detective Leslie Taylor, a young Japanese-British investigator whose cultural knowledge lets her read ritual clues no one else can. As the killings mount, Taylor traces them to an Okinawan shamanic practice that lets wronged wives commission the murder of cheating husbands from behind an airtight alibi a country away.

At a Derbyshire hotel, broker John Simpson lies in bed with his young mistress Amy. At 2 AM the window bursts open on a stench of rotten oranges and an unseen force pins them flat to the mattress. A masked spirit in a white kimono sweeps in and descends until it hovers inches above their faces.

The spirit lifts its mask to reveal John's wife, Cindy — impossibly, since she's away abroad. She presses the mask onto Amy, sets a straw doll on John's chest, and drives an iron spike through it, killing him. The spirit vanishes and the window seals shut as Amy screams over the body.

Detective Leslie Taylor, up all night gaming with her friend Yuta back in Okinawa, trades talk of an old grudge that "settles itself" without hands. A pre-dawn call reports a body. She goes still, her eyes drifting to the oleander she carried home from Okinawa.

Detective Sergeant "Big Ed" Cooper arrives at the sealed hotel room and gets the rundown from Officer Woody: locked from inside, no forced entry, the wife in Saint-Tropez. The only witness, mistress Amy Baxter, swears a ghost — the wife — killed John through a third-floor window. Cooper scoffs; Taylor stares at the taped door, saying nothing.

Examining the body, Taylor identifies the killer's mask as a Hannya — a jealous female demon — and the straw doll as Japanese, not voodoo. She argues no one could drive an iron spike through a man's chest alone, yet there's no evidence anyone else was in the locked room. Cooper stays unconvinced: "Yet."

At the hospital, Taylor gently draws out Amy's account. She describes a citrus stench, a force pinning her flat, and a masked ghost she recognized as Cindy. The spirit slid the mask onto Amy's own face, and through its eye-holes she heard the words "jigou jitoku" and a wet crunch as John died.

Cooper openly disbelieves Amy, suggesting the ghost story masks a jilted lover and that she killed John on an acid trip. Enraged, she grabs him by the shirt before Taylor and the doctor pull her back. She insists she knows exactly what she saw.

In the hallway, Taylor and Cooper clash over the case. She argues the mask, the doll, and the Japanese words point to someone who staged the scene deliberately — not an acid trip. Cooper refuses to chase the supernatural and splits off to follow the hard evidence.

At the morgue, Dr. Walker confirms the spike killed John and that only a perfectly still man could take so clean a strike. The sole DNA is Amy's — but his skin is coated in citric acid powder, matching the citrus smell she described. Grudgingly, Cooper agrees to indulge Taylor's angle.

Over lunch, Cooper and Taylor trade pasts and agree to work separate leads. At the pub, old-timer Rusty recalls his first case — an identical spike-and-straw-doll "Voodoo Murder" that brass buried by framing an innocent man. He tells Cooper the answer is simple: find the witness's boyfriend.
