Through a storm, a black carriage climbs the cliff road of Isla de Tristeza toward Desespere Castle, its black-stained stone rising against the gray. Inside is Miguel Cervantez — long hair, crushed velvet, unimpressed — arriving to marry a half-bred vampire he has never met. The Council waits in the rain, cold and unwelcoming; he towers over them, all teeth, certain they should be grateful he dressed at all. Then lightning cracks and something pulls his eyes to a single high window — a silhouette behind the wet glass, perfectly still, watching him. And he begins to wonder who would watch him so intently.

Behind that high window is Nia — twenty-one, half vampire and half human, raised inside these walls and never once let past them. Her companion Paul, pale and protective, calls Miguel a lonely old wolf, centuries old, and warns that she's to do his bidding. But she has already caught his scent — cedar and rain — and she likes it; they call her an abomination here, and anywhere, she says, is better than this. Down the candlelit aisle, past the roses and the rot the perfumes can't hide, all she can smell is him. She wills the tall stranger to turn, and he does — the floor drops out from under them both.

At the altar, the veil still between them, Miguel and Nia lock pinkies — nothing erotic, something more intimate than that, and absolutely necessary. They say their vows; he lifts the veil and almost forgets himself. But at the wedding table he remembers why he came. On the front steps in the cold mist, the Council stops him with a reminder of the agreement his marriage is bound to: if Nia is ever found to be turned, he stands against the Guild of Wolves and the order of the Council both. A low, inhuman hiss rises from the dark — and beside him, Nia goes still. She didn't know that part.

By daylight Miguel softens and leaves the choice to her. Over dinner Nia understands his turned servants aren't a collection but people he saved — a haven. His music, a moonlit glass of wine, and a ruby ring twinning her own undo her last defenses, and he carries her home.

Their restraint finally breaks — Miguel admits he's been lying about waiting, and they fall into bed at last. But even as he holds her, Nia's eyes keep drifting to the unlatched door. He falls asleep the instant it's over; her mind is already down the hall, planning to sneak through his house.

Nia dissolves into smoke and slips out to explore the grounds, finding a hidden cove behind the weeping willows — where Miguel is already waiting. He warns her the real danger isn't him: he married her because he doesn't trust her coven, and his secrets can't be shared. She soothes his half-wolf fury with a kiss and lets him send her back.

Leo offers a paying job — go willingly or not — and silver cuffs close over Mateo's wrists.
