Three days from the empty throne, the dead king's daughter Amrita reads a copper scroll naming the empire's founding crime and warning that the nagas will wake. The priest Vishwanath tells her they already have.

    To claim the throne, Amrita must confess the theft every crown in seven kingdoms was built on — and be called traitor for it. On the temple steps she tells her bastard brother Ashoka that the empire enslaved the nagas and the chains are breaking. He pledges his soldiers just as a servant races up crying that the river has changed.
