You, Me, and the Final List is a literary romance set in the UPSC-coaching world of Rajinder Nagar, Delhi. Aarya Srivastava is twenty-six and on her third and final attempt at the civil services exam — a person who has organized her entire life into systems, topic lists, and a single non-negotiable library seat. Kabir Roy is a novelist from Kolkata, one underselling book behind him and a second one stalled, who one morning is sitting in her seat. From that small territorial collision grows a year and a half of mornings — two cups of chai, a cup moved two inches to the left, conversations about history and writing that turn out to be the same conversation — and the question underneath it all is whether someone built entirely around one measurable goal can let something unmeasured exist alongside it without either one destroying the other.

The chai has become a ritual: two cups on the table, hers nudged exactly two inches to the left, neither of them finding it strange. Kabir turns her Non-Cooperation Movement notes into a real conversation, and Aarya catches herself, for the first time in years, looking forward to Monday.

Aarya sets Kabir's chai on his writing-hand side and finally asks what he writes — novels, still figuring out what about. The next morning she spots three words in his open notebook — "She makes lists" — and bends over her own page, writing very carefully about Quit India and not thinking about it at all.
